Packing House Wins Award

Claremont Heritage is pleased that its nomination of the College Heights Lemon Packing House has won an award for adaptive reuse from the Los Angeles Conservancy.  One of only seven projects in the entire county, Arteco Partners led by Jerry Tessier will be honored at a luncheon at the Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles in May.  Heritage Board members will be there to cheer him and his team for their outstanding work.

If you haven't visited the Packing House yet you are in for a treat.  Don't miss the two display booths about our citrus past that Heritage has set up on the first floor.

Claremont's Old School House Takes Shape

Except for the loss of the front stairs, the Old School House is looking better than it has in 30 years.  Thanks go to Harry Wu of Claremont Star for the wonderful restoration of the exterior of this landmark building.  The new tile that surrounds the three new doors are copies of the Catalina tile on the second story balcony made by Claremont's own ceramics company - "A Fire Within" located at Indian Hill and Fourth - a beautiful job.

We are very fortunate to have kept this building at the corner of Indian Hill and Foothill.

Fascinating Fact : Some of you may remember that there was once a tunnel under Foothill Blvd. to make sure that high school students reached the high school safely!  That was when most people lived south of Foothill (Route 66) and the high school was north of this busy road.  The tunnel was closed in the mid 1960s when the new High School was built.

Reminder
If you have never taken one of our downtown walking tours now is the time.  We meet in front of the Metrolink depot at 10:00 am the first Saturday of every month and the tour now includes the Village Expansion area, the Packing House and the public plaza.
